Deck utilisation

Print this Topic   Return to chapter overview

eCargo provides an indication of the percentage of the deck used by the cargo items planned. The deck utilisation is the ratio of the used deck area compared to the available deck area.

Available deck area

The deck area is the total available space for placing cargo. It is defined by the length and width of the deck area as indicated in the following picutre:

AvailableDeckSpace

To compensate for gangways and general 'lost' space a utilisation factor is available. The utilisation factor is regional context specific.

It is also possible to define an area to be excluded from the available deck area, for example in the situation where the vessel’s own cargo occupies part of the deck. This exclusion area is set per vessel..

The available deck space is then calculated as follows: (Length of the deck cargo area x Width of the deck cargo area) * utilisation factor - exclusion area

Used deck Area

In general this is defined by the cargo footprint. However, different types of cargo require specific calculations.

For offshore containers a margin is added to account for slings and shackles. The footprint of an offshore container is calculated as follows: (Cargo length + margin) * (Cargo width + margin)

This margin is  regional context specific.  .

For tubulars you can indicate the stacking level to compensate for the fact that tubulars can be stacked on top of each other. The footprint of the cargo item is corrected with the stacking level by multiplying it with (quantity / stack level).

The default stack level for containers it is set to 1 and for tubulars to 3. This level can be manually overruled.

You can also reserve a deck area for specific cargo items. You can use this to provide for more accurate information on the area used for tubulars, but for example also to indicate a specific area to be kept free for backload cargo. The total reserved area will be taken into account as 'used' no matter if cargo is placed in the area or not.

ReservedAreaCalculation

The total used deck space is calculated by the combination of all (corrected) footprints of cargo items not in the reserved area plus the area for the reserved areas.
